Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre

Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre runs a number of projects focused around four main categories:-

Volunteer Placements

The core function of the Volunteer Centre is to find placements for volunteers within the local community. Their recruitment, training, placement and support aims to match volunteers' skills to clients' needs where possible.

Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre has an Equal Opportunities approach to volunteering and everybody is welcome to apply, restrictions only being in place where work with children or vulnerable adults would require a police check. Those wishing to volunteer need to complete a form available from the Volunteer Centre at 16 Station Road, Ystradgynlais and have an interview with a member of staff who will ascertain their skills and needs, and look to see whether there are projects run by the YVC that you can volunteer with, or whether to signpost you to another organisation which, for example, would work directly with animals.

All volunteers sign a Code of Practice agreeing to abide by the rules of the Volunteer Centre, and receive induction, and the opportunity for relevant training.

Recycling Projects

Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre runs a Tool Store, and the Ystrad Woodstore, recycling projects which were begun under a Powys Zero Waste grant, but have become self-supporting over the last few years.

The Tool Store is affiliated with Tools For Self Reliance (Cymru) and a proportion of what is donated to us goes to help make communities in Tanzania self-sufficient. The Tool Store refurbishes, reconditions and, where necessary rehandles, a wide selection of gardening, construction and lndscaping tools which are sold to the local community of Ystradgynlais and district for a reasonable price. They can also undertake repairs for any tools that you may wish to keep and can rehandle these for you as well.

The Tool Store also has a key-cutting service available, and is open Thursdays and Fridays, from 9am til 1pm.

The Ystrad Woodstore is based in a fully-refurbished ex-Remploy factory in Glanrhyd, Ystradgynlais, thanks to a grant from the Welsh Assembly Government. These premises have allowed the Wood Store to expand the number of machines that can be used at any one time, and to be able to take on more volunteers. The scope of services offered by the Wood Store has also grown, with more large-scale orders being able to be processed at the same time.

A sample of the craft and garden products available from Ystrad Woodstore can be found by going to their online catalogue. The Wood Store is open at Old Remploy Monday to Saturdays from 9am til 1pm.

If you wish to volunteer to work in either the Tool Store or the Wood Store, please come into the Volunteer Centre to speak to the manager, or phone 01639 849192 for an appointment.

Co-ordinating Healthcare

The Co-ordinating Healthcare Projects has a specific staff-member in charge of it. It is funded to offer supportive care to clients to assist them to stay in their own home rather than be admitted to hospital, enabling some independence and management of their lives where possible.

The project works in close co-ordination with its partners, and assists clients in need of help to achieve a solution to their problems, whether they are individuals, referred by Social Services, the Health Services, or any other providers or groups in the community.

All volunteers and staff on this project have fully-enhanced CRB checks. The project covers an estimated 5-mile radius from Ystradgynlais, including Ystalyfera, Godrergraig, Penrhos, Abercraf, Ynyswen, Penycae, Cae Hopkin, Coelbren, Gurnos and Cwmtwrch.

Services available under this project include:-

Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre also provides a sign-posting service, helping people find the services or organisations that suit their requirements.

The YVC at 16 Station Road, Ystradgynlais has a wide range of leaflets and flyers, categorised by subject matter, and maintains a compendium of local information in the "Network News" publication.

Volunteers who wish to work with specialisms not found within the projects of Ystradgynlais Volunteer Centre, will also be sign-posted to relevant organisations that they can approach to volunteer with. These include the Brecknock Wildlife Trust for those wishing to work with the environment, or Lluest Horse and Pony Trust and the Shire Horse Centre at Dan-yr-Ogof for those wishing to work directly with animals.
